Usually, I start off an article talking about a single work and use it to lead into my subject, but I thought I'd try something else these next two weeks. Today, I'll be recommending some Steam games that don't get as much attention as I think they deserve. I'll list all the games with the standard price (they're all $20 or less) and a link to the store page. Some are obscure, some cult classics, but I can guarantee they're all at least worth your time. So, without further ado, let's get into the list!
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure ($10)
Gurumin is a 3D platformer with a large focus on combat, with some RPG elements mixed in. It's a game from the time of 6th gen of consoles, and it really shows, with a lot of charm that was largely unique to that time. Your weapon is a drill, and although it sadly does not pierce the heavens, it is a very fun way of dealing with enemies that isn't just jumping or spinning. It's a lot like the collectathons of the N64. The story and dub are pretty awful, but the characters are charming, and the gameplay more than makes up for it. If you like 3D platformers, this one will be a blast. |
100% Orange Juice ($7)
I've heard many people claim that Mario Party ruins friendships. Those people have clearly never played 100% Orange Juice. If Mario Party went all-out weeb, all-out board game, and all-out evil, this is what you'd get. Revenge, hatred, screams of agony... all things hidden under the cute pastel colors and anime girls. Nothing compares to the pure evil of going out of your way to bring others down, and partnerships only last until one of those in it decides to backstab the other and take the win. Marie Poppo is the devil, and Suguri is her archangel. If any of this sounds even remotely interesting, buy a four pack instantly, set up a game with your friends, and sell your soul to Poppo. You'll never regret it. |
Soundodger+ ($8)
Soundodger+ is an extended version of the Adult Swim Games online game, Soundodger (which you can play for free here). It's a bullet hell game, where you dodge the hazards coming to the beat of the music. You can slow down time to more safely avoid some of these hazards, but it'll detract from your score. A simple concept, but it's a lot of fun. It also has a really nice graphical presentation, and the soundtrack is excellent as well. You can map your own songs, or use the built in auto-generator, although the results aren't always that great. Regardless, if you want a nice, challenging bullet hell with good music, this one is for you. |
Freedom Planet ($15)
Freedom Planet originally started development as a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame, with a demo for the Sonic Amateur Games Expo gaining it a lot of attention. It later became an independent game, got crowdfunded within 8 hours, and was sold on Steam, and boy, has it surpassed it's origins. It's a fast platformer, but with hazards and a wide field of vision accommodating for that speed. Never does a death or health reduction feel like it's impossible to see coming, it's all on the player. There are multiple different characters, with different playstyles that all give a unique twist to the gameplay. Overall, it's an excellent platformer, great for anybody who craves a bit more than the Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis/Mega Drive trilogy |
They Bleed Pixels ($15)
A 2D platformer with deep combat, They Bleed Pixels is a challenge for anybody looking for a hard platformer that isn't just riding the coattails of Super Meat Boy. You fight enemies by hitting them with combos, on the ground or areal, and then knocking them into stage hazards. After gaining enough points from this, you're given a checkpoint, which is placed behind you once you stand still. Not your average difficult game, it's a unique experience for anybody looking for a 2D platformer that's a little different than most. |
I hope you guys liked that list, I'll have another list of five next Friday. Again, all of these games are worth your attention, and they're pretty cheap as well. Have fun checking these ones out, and I'll be back next week with another list. In the meantime, this is your captain, signing off.
No, seriously. New article next Friday.
