Welcome back, a week earlier than usual (told you guys). Anyways, quick recap, this is just a list of Steam games that I'd recommend, and are at least worth your time. Every one of them is something I feel hasn't really gotten the recognition it deserves. Every game will have the list price and will link directly to the Steam store page, and they'll all be under $20 (and yes, $19.99 rounds up, but it's still under). Let's get into the list.
Lethal League ($14)
Hit the other player with the ball. A simple concept, especially considering gravity doesn't apply to it. A mixture of a fighting game and Pong, Lethal League is a unique take on the fighting game style. Featuring characters with different traits and special abilities, there's a lot of strategy involved in hitting the other player. The game also has a really cool aesthetic style, and all the characters have distinct looks (Candyman looks straight out of a Studio Bones production). It's also got a jamming soundtrack, and can be a great time with friends. |
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People ($20)
Before they became famous for The Walking Dead, Telltale Games made point and click games, and Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People was one of the latest of them, with five episodes of self-contained stories. It has Homestar Runner's signature sense of humor (and if you haven't watched Homestar Runner, get out and do so RIGHT NOW). Sadly, the gameplay falls under the common problem of nonsensical, contrived solutions to mundane puzzles, but if you just get a guide out for the hard parts and enjoy the game on the story alone, it's very funny and still worth the price. |
Love ($3)
Love is not a particularly innovative or unique game, but it's one with great design and a lot of replayability. It's a short 2D platformer, with a first playthrough lasting a little over 15 minutes, but the ranking system and higher difficulties (especially YOLO mode) make it fun to go back and play again. The game allows you to place a checkpoint at any given spot, so you don't have to repeat sections you've already passed. The controls feels really nice, and gives complete control at all times, even in the air. The soundtrack and visuals are excellent, and it even comes with a level editor. Not for everybody, but if it sounds interesting, give it a shot. |
Nidhogg ($15)
When it comes to party games, Nidhogg might just be the best one out there. The game is lightning-paced, and you fence with your opponent. Both of your goals are to get to the end of the side opposite to you, while keeping the other player out of your way. Why? To sacrifice yourself to the Nidhogg. Let your guard down for a second and you're dead. Frantic, gory, and hilarious, the game gets very competitive when you're playing with a friend. The game has a really distinct style, with a great graphical style and a soundtrack that fits the game perfectly. Play it with friends, you will not be disappointed. |
Worms Ultimate Mayhem ($15)
The Worms series got a lot of attention for 2D games such as Worms: Armageddon, although the 3D titles never gained much. Worms Ultimate Mayhem is an HD re-release of Worms 4: Mayhem, featuring some tweaks and the campaign from Worms 3D as well. The basic turn-based combat of the original series remains, but the 3D layout of the levels fixes the massive issue from the originals in which it was very hard to maneuver around the map. With a huge arsenal of weapons, ranging from the poke of a finger to the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, it's a blast to play with friends, and I encourage everybody who liked the 2D games to give it a shot. |
And that concludes our list. Now that all of the games are out there, I feel now is the best time to announce the S.S. Amino official Steam group! It features a Steam curator page right now, although I'm not sure what I'd want to do with the group otherwise. I'm open to any suggestions, just comment them on the page. Be sure to join if you want any updates on where I'll take it, and in the meantime, this is your captain, signing off.
