The question for the next game in the series immediately became "How do we avoid making the same mistake?" Their goal was to make a game that's still enjoyable on a casual level, but didn't have a huge gap between that and competitive players. The instinctive reaction was to remove the chance of the game being competitively viable at all, and the resulting game was Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Removed L-canceling and wavedashing, random tripping, awful character balancing, the game had it all.
